本剧基于真实事件、2004年法国纪录片《楼梯悬案》、书籍《Written in Blood》等素材创作而成。故事将探索Michael Peterson的生活，他那位于北卡罗来纳州的大家庭，以及他妻子Kathleen Peterson十分可疑的死亡。。一把开启财富大门的钥匙，引得不同的三方来争夺，谁拿到那把钥匙就可以开启财富大门。可惜，争夺这把钥匙的游戏只是一个局，人们为了争夺那把钥匙，开始不择手段，丑态毕露，都想得到不劳而获的财富。。A reporter, cameraman, and some petty thieves are stranded in a boat out on the ocean.
