该剧以“三线建设”为背景，讲述的就是上世纪六七十年代一场真实发生在西南十三省的战略大迁徙事件。该剧通过闻一达、梅湘云等三线建设者的工作生活，演绎了他们在那特殊的年代所经历的痛苦和欢乐、豪情与浪漫，讴歌了两代三线建设者献身大西北的奉献精神。。苏兹（Kerry Fox 饰）、泰特（Sally Stockwell 饰）等一伙极富冒险精神的年轻人决定驾船从新西兰前往斐济，享受他们惊险刺激的假期之旅。当船行驶在南太平洋中央时，海上突起大雾，所有通讯全部中断。正当他们焦急之时，一艘破旧的小渔船由远及近出现在他们面前。船上有一个奄奄一息的希腊人（John Rhys-Davies 饰），他自称知晓欺骗死神的方法，迄今为止已活了数个世纪。而如今大限临近，地狱三途河的摆渡人正摇橹前来，欲将其带往另一个世界。 年轻人虽然对他的说辞不甚相信，但从希腊人上船那一刻起，诡异之事便接连发生……。A 16 year old Carol is going through a period of major changes in her life.
